ALL THE ABOVE
SUCCESS STORY

Asthma is a huge concern with our students. Many times parents do not realize the severity of asthma because most of the time their kids are well and do not have symptoms. Education for the parents is extremely important. We strive very hard to tell them the basic facts about asthma, including triggers, symptoms, and treatment. We also stress the importance of maintenance medications. We have had to be extremely diligent, following a policy that we have set up, in order to keep our students safe at school. All of our students with asthma have an emergency action plan, which is signed by the Dr. as well as the parent. If the plan includes an inhaler, we reach out to the parent to assist them to get the inhaler at school. We keep our inhalers in a cabinet that is easily accessible, and it is in alphabetical order. In an emergent situation we can readily grab it.

We work hard to help our kids understand about their asthma, so that they can tell an adult when they are not feeling well, and get the help that they need. We give teachers a copy of the care plan of their students that have asthma. We in-service the teachers about how to recognize the symptoms of asthma, and how to use the inhaler. Sending the inhaler with the teacher when they go out on field trips is very important to keep the students safe. Making the staff aware of triggers can drastically reduce the severity of symptoms. Asthma is a disease that can be potentially very serious, but if our policy is in place, we are able to do everything that we can to keep our students safe at school.
