ESTABLISHING/ADOPTING MODEL ASTHMA POLICIES
SUCCESS STORY

At the beginning of the 2008/2009 school year, one of the goals our school Wellness Committee was determined to accomplish was to write an Asthma Policy and have individual emergency asthma plans in place for every student in our school that has asthma. We have adopted an Asthma policy and have created an Asthma Action Plan for each student that has asthma. Every staff member, playground supervisor, bus driver and support staff have received training on the signs of an asthma attack and the procedures to take to help a student who is having an asthma attack.

In addition, our school now requires that if it is necessary for a student to take medication during the school day, the parent must complete a Medication Administration Release Form informing the student's teacher and school office of the proper instructions for administering the medicine. All medications, written prescriptions or over-the-counter medications, are only dispensed from the school office and must be kept in the prescribed container and labeled with the students name on it.

We are continuing to more forward and make St. Mary's School a school environment that is committed to our student's health.
