SCHOOL BREAKFAST SUCCESS STORY
I noticed this year, along with many staff that many children were complaining of being hungry in the morning, falling asleep in class and they had poor classroom participation. Although we provide a before school breakfast program, that wasn't enough because children arrived near bell time and after.
After speaking with the administration and getting materials to back up the benefits of Breakfast in the Classroom the principal finally agreed to put the program in place. Even after a month, we noticed children arriving to school earlier to participate in the program and classroom achievement improving. Test scores are better than last year and we have more alert children in the classroom. We average 170-220 (out of 299 enrolled) breakfast every morning. Some teachers requested low sugar cereals so I made 3 choices available for them: Cheerios, Rice Krispies, and Kix. They seem to be pleased with the selection along with the children. The students also have had the opportunity to vote for their favorite cereal. Also, I am looking in to different alternatives other than cereal for breakfast as well.
Overall, our program is going very well, we have experienced no barriers and I am looking forward to continuing to provide a great breakfast at no cost to the children. That way all children are fed without the worry of paying. Happy children = happy staff= making everyone's job easier and happier.
