EDUCATION FOR STAFF, STUDENTS AND FAMILIES ABOUT ASTHMA
SUCCESS STORY

Asthma is a chronic lung condition in which the airways become inflamed and swollen. As a result, the air passages become too narrow, often resulting in coughing, wheezing, chest tightness and shortness of breath. Unfortunately about 1 child in every 15 has asthma. The number of students with asthma has been steadily increasing at our school. One of our students has such a severe case of asthma that he missed almost a week of school because he couldn’t even leave his house!

We decided to educate our students, staff, and parents about asthma. First we had a nurse present at one of our staff meetings. She provided an overview of asthma – including common triggers, symptoms, and how to help students manage their asthma. Next our school nurse included asthma information in our school newsletters. For the month of May, asthma facts were part of our daily bulletin. Not only is our bulletin posted throughout the school, but it is also read each morning by students who broadcast the announcements on the TV. In addition, asthma books, pamphlets, and posters have been purchased so asthma education will be ongoing at O.L. Smith Middle School.
