SUCCESS STORY
Breakfast Success Story
River Valley Elementary had a breakfast promotion during the last two weeks of April. We called it Breakfast Boosts Brainpower!
Special taste treats were offered on several days, including fruit smoothies, hot oatmeal with nuts, fruit, and cinnamon and fresh mixed fruit. Fun, upbeat music added a great deal to the ambience! Materials provided by the USDA were used as incentives: 50 students who found a sticker on the bottom of their milk carton received a Got Milk? T-shirt. Four Got Milk? coolers were presented to the lucky winners of a drawing at the end of the promotion.
Our goal was to increase the average number of students participating in school breakfast. During the promotion, breakfast participation went up by about 25%. After the promotion, during the last month of school the average was about 12% higher than the school year’s average.
We consider this a success and, hopefully, we will be able to keep it going in the fall.
