EDUCATION FOR STAFF, STUDENTS AND FAMILIES ABOUT ASTHMA SUCCESS STORY
As a result of completion of the grant obtained to complete the Healthy Schools Action Tool, the Van Buren/Belleville School district has established a Healthy Schools Action Team willing to champion:
1) The obtaining and use of Asthma Action Plans 2) Improvements to Xangle database “Medical Conditions” section with enhanced access for staff involved in the symptomatic care of students on a daily basis or during an emergency 3) Working toward capturing data on lost school/work days due to asthma symptoms vs. more general “sickness” The district plans to include administrators, teachers, bus drivers, food service workers, and housekeeping staff in the scheduled September asthma and other health related conditions trainings at their respective facilities.
A longer term goal is to identify staff, families or students who might be interested in attending the more comprehensive (and lengthy) Asthma 1-2-3 Training and other trainings on management of chronic health conditions.
There is also an increased awareness of the need to identify students with chronic medical conditions in general and to consider how to best support them in preventing exacerbations of their illness. In addition, concern for families suffering the loss of insurance benefits has prompted an even greater interest in obtaining support for school based health services.
