SCHOOL BREAKFAST SUCCESS STORY
Mulick Park Elementary School (GRPS) is the place for breakfast! To participate in the State Superintendent’s Breakfast Challenge. Mulick Park kicked off the 08/09 school year by piloting the New Look of School Milk, offering skim white and 1% chocolate milk in 8 oz. plastic bottles. On November 12, 2008, they held a breakfast promotion including a visit from Erma the Cow. Kent MSU Extension and the YMCA of Greater Grand Rapids partnered with Food and Nutrition staff, providing free pencils and an opportunity to exercise with Erma the Cow. Staff visited with students, discussing the importance of a healthy breakfast that includes milk!
These efforts, and constant encouragement from the staff at Mulick, have proved successful! Breakfast participation has increased from 38% in 07/08 to 56% to date in 08/09. Milk consumption has also increased from approximately 2 ounces consumed per student to 4 oz. consumed per student at breakfast.
Currently (March 2009), the school is participating in the district-wide breakfast essay contest. For details about the contest, please go to www.grpublicschools.org and follow the department link to Nutrition Services.
