SCHOOL BREAKFAST
SUCCESS STORY

BREAKFAST: It's the most important meal of the day. Isn't that how most of us grew up? With a little encouragement in the form of a Breakfast Challenge from Mike Flanagan, I approached our new Superintendent Dan Bauer and the entire Cheboygan Area Schools Administrative Team about FREE breakfast for everyone. Cheboygan Area Schools began offering UNIVERSAL FREE BREAKFAST for all students in every building at the start of the 08-09 school years. In these tough economic times we knew we could make a difference in the lives of our students. We also knew that well nourished students are more alert and attentive which should lead to better learning and fewer discipline problems. So far it seems to be working.

To meet the MI School Breakfast Challenge, we implemented “Breakfast in the Classroom” at our High School and participation has soared to 80%. Each day a student from every homeroom comes to the cafeteria where he/she picks up a Got Milk? Cooler filled with an assortment of breakfast items such as milk, cereal, fresh fruit, juice and granola bars. In the classroom, a laminated tracking sheet is used to record daily participation. The tracking sheet and the empty cooler are then returned to the cafeteria for processing. Staff members are excited about breakfast and comment on positive behavioral changes; homeroom teachers report a lower incidence of tardiness and third hour teachers report more attentive students with fewer complaints of hunger. It takes some planning and hard work but what a great investment for our students! Next year we hope to expand “Breakfast in the Classroom” to more buildings.
