EDUCATION FOR STAFF, STUDENTS AND FAMILIES ABOUT ASTHMA SUCCESS STORY
Asthma 1-2-3 Training and Its Impact on My Child's Life, A personal Story written by Christine Sermak, Principal at Williamston Middle School, January 27, 2009 On December 16, 2008, Alison Nix and her staff came to an after-school professional development meeting with our middle school staff at Williamston Middle School. The “Asthma 1-2-3” program focused on educating our staff on the signs and symptoms of asthma as well as the importance of preventive plans, management, and communications with school, home, and doctors. I was eager to learn more about asthma and what we could do as a building to ensure the safety of our students and staff. The content presented exceeded my expectations. It not only resulted in us creating building-wide action plans and additional communications home to some of our parents regarding their child’s asthma treatment plan, but it also prompted me to make an appointment for my five-year-old daughter with her physician.
While being presented with the facts and figures regarding the signs and symptoms of asthma at the training, I began to reflect and make connections to my daughter and her health. I thought to myself: “Yes, she experienced prolonged coughing at night, has dark circles underneath her eyes and a pale face, has allergies, recently complains of a headache, etc….” I exited the session thanking Ms. Nix for the informative presentation and went right for my phone to contact her doctor.
My daughter, Lexie, was diagnosed with asthma within three (3) weeks of the 1-2-3 asthma training session. I was educated enough, through our 45-minute training session at the middle school, to feel comfortable asking questions while at the doctor’s office. I knew what the role of the spacer was as the nurse was giving it to my daughter in a demonstration, and I even grabbed an asthma plan form from her school office to bring to the doctor’s office with me.
Yes, there are many times where my two worlds collide and not always for the better. However, I am most thankful that this time was for the positive. It truly made a difference in the life of my daughter and in my ability to be a better parent.
