EDUCATION FOR STAFF, STUDENTS AND FAMILIES ABOUT ASTHMA
SUCCESS STORY

The CATCH Breathmobile with Children's Hospital of Michigan is a mobile asthma team which goes to several Detroit Public schools for asthma assessment, care, and follow-up. Donna Castone, RN assigned to Bunche Elementary and Mr. Marvin Franklin, the principal, invited us to come and set up a mobile asthma clinic at Bunche school. Assessment forms were initially given to all students at Bunche to identify any student with asthma, cough, difficulty breathing, chest pain, or bronchitis.

One grandmother who responded had three grandchildren at Bunche school and she was concerned about asthma and allergies.

Our CATCH Breathmobile team was able to evaluate all three children and determine that two of them have asthma. We formulated Asthma action plans, taught about environmental triggers and controls, smoking, made sure the children had the proper medications, and taught the children and the grandmother how to use the medications and inhalers/nebulizers. Each visit provided an opportunity for further education and demonstration of the MDI inhaler with a spacer. We also taught emergency care and we provided each child with a spacer.

This flu season we provided flu shots to children in the Breathmobile program. For the grandmother and her two asthmatic grandchildren we were able to go over the seriousness of influenza with asthma and they also received flu vaccines at that time.

Recently, when the family's heat and lights were turned off, the grandmother called us for help, she remembered that cold is a trigger for asthma. We provided support and a letter to DTE for the electricity to be turned back on. We informed DTE about the necessity of electricity for the nebulizers and told them that cold was an asthma trigger for these children.

This is just one story at Bunche and one of the many success stories of our CATCH Breathmobile program in the schools where we participate.
