SCHOOL LUNCH
SUCCESS STORY

Our school is located in an urban area with many abandoned homes that our students have to walk by to get to school. This poses a problem because our students are afraid to walk and/or ride a bike to school for fear of who may be in these abandoned homes. During the 2006/2007 school year, our 3rd grade class (current fourth graders) wrote letters to the Saginaw City Council to get an abandoned home right next to our school demolished so they would feel safe walking to school. On October 30, 2007, we witnessed the house being demolished with the help of the Saginaw City Council and the Mayor at the time, Carol B. Cottrell - it was absolutely awesome for students to see what their writings and concerns for health and safety accomplished (an article was in the Saginaw News on October 31, 2007 in the Metro section A3). During this time, the school also applied for the Safe Routes to School grant.

Our school participated in a Walk to School day as well as an activity in which everyone - students, parents, teachers, community members, district leaders, etc. - participated in physical activity at one time. Currently, we are looking very closely at our menu items for breakfast and lunch to make sure there are healthy choices not only during the regular school year, but during the summer school session as well by meeting with our Food Service team. As far as our application for the Safe Routes to School grant, it is complete and being considered at this time.
