SCHOOL LUNCH SUCCESS STORY
On May 7th, 2008, through a grant our school received from Team Nutrition, our school was able to hold a Taste Testing event and survey as well as participating in the annual ACES (All Children Exercising Simultaneously) Day. The grant requires that certain criteria be met for healthy school lunches. We were lacking in a few areas such as fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grain items and legumes. We needed to make some changes to our lunch menu and offer some healthier options to our students. Some research shows that students are more likely to opt for new foods at school if they have tried it before seeing it in the cafeteria line. That is why we were interested in having a Taste Testing event.
The items we chose were with the expectation that they could be introduced into our school lunch menu. With the help of our Interested Parents Group, items were prepared for each classroom. Students and staff were able to taste test six different items, including 100% juice bars, grape tomatoes, cucumber slices, soft wheat pretzel rods, hummus and Loco Bread (whole grain item). The juice bar was the favorite item and hummus was either loved or loathed! The survey showed that there was enough positive interest in these items that all of them could be used in our lunch menu.
We hope that by adding healthier items to our lunch menu, nutrition education and staff modeling healthy behavior, our students will adopt healthy choices throughout their lives.
