SCHOOL LUNCH
SUCCESS STORY

For Luther L. Wright High School, the completion of the Healthy School Action Tools (HSAT) assessment opened the windows to many school improvements. The HSAT:
• Allowed us to implement policies that covered vending machine sales and products.
• Assisted us in developing district policies that prevented gym class as punishment.
• Provided information regarding classroom eating habits and policy guidelines for teachers to implement in their classrooms to insure healthy snacking.
• Motivated us to apply for grants to help defray the costs of wellness activities for students and staff.
• Prompted us to invite the parents and community to share in healthy lifestyle activities and education.

The board of education approved the recommendations suggested by our Coordinated School Health Team, which gave the whole thing credence and merit.

In addition, our food service director has been helpful in creating a healthier school environment. He and his staff have utilized the HSAT information to realign their food products and meal planning. They now use whole grains more often and low-fat food products regularly. The daily selection of fruits and vegetables has increased and a salad bar is offered daily. Modifications and changes to a la carte choices were also made to offer more non-fat and low-fat products, a variety of juices, and water.

Luther L. Wright High School is a healthier school because we completed the HSAT.
