SCHOOL LUNCH
SUCCESS STORY

Cleveland Elementary School began our Healthy Initiative when we were approached by community members with a grant to improve the health of our students. They chose our school due to our high risk student population. We met several times and found out that we had a real problem with our students eating habits, exercise, and knowledge about what it means to have a healthy body. We began by coming up with a plan to involve our community members to assist us with family evenings which included exercise tips, cooking tips for dinners and desserts, and Fear Factor Fun at our open house to taste healthy exotic fruits and vegetables.

We are also the first school to hold a Michigan Market Day! Another change we made is “Recess before Lunch” which has made a tremendous difference in our student’s food intake and behavior problems, along with the cleanest hands. The results are amazing and we continue to make successes with rewarding our students with non-consumable awards! We just keep getting healthier!!!!!
