SCHOOL LUNCH
SUCCESS STORY

At the beginning of the 2006-07 school years, Williamston Middle School was given the charge to implement the District Wellness A policy. It was created and mandated by the Board of Education and District Wellness Policy Committee. A committee was formed comprising of students, teachers, counselors, administrators, parents and food service providers, to determine a plan of action. After determining what aspects of the policy were already being implemented successfully, the team prioritized items within the policy that had yet to be implemented at the middle school.

In the past five months, Williamston Middle School has begun to make huge strides with the implementation of the Williamston Community Schools Wellness Policy. For example, pop and high calorie and sugar content beverages have been replaced with healthier choices such as Propel, Life Water and Aquafina Water. In coordination with the high school, the middle school is offering healthy choices before and after school in their vending machines. Choices include: carrot sticks and ranch, string cheese, fresh apple slices, strawberry yogurt Nutria-Grain bars and 1% chocolate milk. Additionally, the lunch menu has been improved by presenting healthier choices such as a yogurt/fruit/granola bar, sandwich central using whole grain breads, and recently including a fresh salad bar.

All of the achievements have been communicated to students, staff and parents through the school newsletter, website and via school announcements. To further increase awareness and educate students, parents, and community members to make informed decisions regarding these healthier options, the middle school Wellness Committee is hosting the 2nd Annual Middle School Health Summit. This year’s focus will be on the importance of nutrition and physical activity. Here’s to a great start to a healthier and more active 2007 within Williamston Schools!!!!
