SCHOOL LUNCH SUCCESS STORY
Healthy Success Story
Over the past several years Galesburg-Augusta High School has been incorporating small changes leading to big nutritional results. By gradually eliminating foods with no nutritional value, the students have been more accepting of the healthier foods.
The soft drink machines have been placed on timers. No student, or staff member, can obtain a soft drink until after the school day. The revenue from the soft drink machines, which go to the Sports Boosters organization, has decreased. Although the district and community believe students health is far more important than revenue.
Three years ago students could purchase candy, fried chips and other fatty foods from the vending machines. Galesburg-Augusta High School replaced the vending items, giving students healthier options. The vending machines now consist of items such as, fruits, yogurt, baked chips and peanuts.
The lunch menu has fresh fruits and vegetables offered more often. Deep frying is a thing of the past, as all items are now baked. Hand sanitizers have been installed at the beginning of each line to add to the healthy environment. The food service department works in collaboration with the health teachers to post nutritional information on all foods sold through the lunch line.
In addition to these changes the Galesburg-Augusta High School has worked to create awareness throughout the community. Information regarding healthy living can now be found on the district web site and in the district newsletter. Galesburg-Augusta High School is continuing to make strides to ensure that each student is living healthy while in school and is given the tools to live healthy throughout their lives.
