SCHOOL LUNCH SUCCESS STORY
Once our director started putting "Variety of Fresh Fruit" on our menu everyday, our students began eating a lot more fresh fruit instead of canned. We cup our fruits daily; grapes, kiwi, watermelon, and even orange slices. Our self serve table looks fresh and beautiful and our vegetable selection has also improved.
We started ordering more fresh carrots, cucumbers, and broccoli; the students love it with a little Fat Free Ranch Dressing. We decided to stop ordering canned vegetables because the color was dull and the texture was soft and mushy. Now we use our steamer for all our vegetables. The color is brighter, the taste is fresher, and the texture is now crisp. Our teachers, who would usually only buy the entrée without the fruits and vegetables, are now buying the whole lunch because they want the new fresh fruit and steamed vegetables. Our director made the decision to discontinue 2% white milk and offer only 1%. "Its less fat and better for our kids," says our director. No one ever noticed the change.
The Food Service Staff at Kreeger Elementary feel good about the changes we have made. Our lunch trays are filled with beautiful, healthy, and fresher tasting food.
