SCHOOL LUNCH SUCCESS STORY
We applied and received a grant through Team Nutrition. The grant requires certain criteria to be met which have been helpful for staff to create a healthier school lunch menu. Our Food Service Staff are working on completing web cast training for Healthier US Challenge. They have begun to incorporate into our lunch menu fresh fruits and vegetables at least three times a week. There have been some different vegetables added to the menu such as broccoli, cauliflower and California blend. Broccoli has been a big hit and has been requested by students to be served again. One student even put her broccoli on her hamburger! Gradually we are changing to whole grain bread products and also trying to find ways to add legumes at least once a week. We have been encouraged by positive comments from elementary students, staff and parents. We appreciate the Food Service Staff being willing to make these changes to help our students receive healthier school lunch choices. Our goal and hope would be that these new changes would be life changes for our students.
