EDUCATION FOR STAFF, STUDENTS AND FAMILIES ABOUT ASTHMA
SUCCESS STORY

Northeast Elementary School has 690 students and 120 of those students have been diagnosed with asthma. The school health educator and school nurse provide education to students about asthma, its triggers, and how to use their inhaler or nebulizer. All staff members have been provided a list of asthma students and know what to do in case a child is having an asthma attack. The school staff received education from a pulmonary specialist on asthma and its effects.

Tuesday May 6th, 2008 was World Asthma Day and students at Northeast participated in an asthma health fair that consisted of four stations. Students rotated to another station after 10 minutes where they learned about asthma, asthma triggers, second hand smoke, how the lungs work, and asthma and exercise. The Northeast School Based Health Center sponsored an Asthma Awareness Night where parents were informed about asthma and preventative ways to help control their child's asthma. A local asthma specialist provided pulmonary function testing for those asthma patients that attended. Families that attended were awarded asthma/allergy prevention products.
