ESTABLISHING/ADOPTING MODEL ASTHMA POLICIES
SUCCESS STORY

Our school was chosen to do an asthma pilot for the HSAT assessment. We were excited to do this to improve our school in whatever way possible to help student's who have asthma. Our nurse does a training at the beginning of school for all staff members and then individual training for every student and their parent. They then sign a contract. An asthma action plan is distributed to all teachers that are in contact with that student throughout the day. Through the asthma module of the HSAT we wanted to purchase vacuums that used HEPA filters and found out we already used those in our school. Since our nurse has done such a good job implementing her program we only had one main concern, this was to seek donations for a nebulizer to put in the nurses office so the student's would not have to carry their own around. Our nurse wrote to a local pharmacy to see if they would donate a nebulizer and they agreed. We have 18 students that use the nebulizer and now they always have access to it and do not have to worry about carrying it around or forgetting their own. The student does as much of the preparation and cleaning of the nebulizer as possible to make them responsible.

Our other great success is that students, staff, and parents are educated about asthma which holds the student accountable for the disease and helps them learn to live as normal a life as possible. We now see children who are more likely to be successful in life because they understand their condition and know how to deal it. The child has the freedom to concentrate on their studies instead of being held back by these symptoms.
