SCHOOL BREAKFAST SUCCESS STORY
Our school offers breakfast daily, yet we have had only 12% of the students eating breakfast at school. Our goal was to provide a healthy breakfast, promote the idea of eating breakfast to parents, and increase the amount of students eating breakfast.
First, when school started, we included the breakfast menu on the back side of the lunch menu and distributed them to all families. In September, our parent group did a Mother's Breakfast membership drive. We offered the breakfast members a hot breakfast and split the cost between the school and parent group so that moms, grandmas and aunts could see what was provided at breakfast. We had over 100 adults attend this year! We surveyed them and found there was strong support for skim milk only. We made some changes based on the survey; we added hot breakfast every other day, offered skim milk only and eliminated high fat muffins and breakfast pizza. We also instituted an "Eat Breakfast with Your Class" campaign for grades K-3. An entire grade level eats breakfast together once a month and the students pay for their own breakfast. A free breakfast is also provided one day in February during wellness month and we have a Father's Breakfast in May which is something the school has always done.
All of these activities have nearly doubled the number of students eating breakfast daily, we are continuing these campaigns throughout this coming year.
