SCHOOL BREAKFAST SUCCESS STORY
As a result of information collected from conversations with parents, staff, and the district food service department, the principal of Schavey Road Elementary School was on a regular basis, feeding a number of student’s breakfast because they come to school hungry. Schavey Road Elementary School started the National Breakfast Program last April 2006.
The program is staffed by a food service employee and the breakfast items meet all federal nutrition guidelines. Sample breakfast items include 2 of the items below: Cereal, Graham Crackers, Bagels, String Cheese, Granola Bar and Yogurt. In addition, Milk and Juice are served with every breakfast.
This program is available for all students including students who qualify for free or reduced lunch. The cost for breakfast is $1.25 and the reduced rate is $.30 a day. This amount is deducted from the students' debit account in the same manner that lunch is deducted. On the average, 18-20 students participate in the breakfast program everyday. This cuts down on the number of students coming to the office in the morning complaining of stomach aches.
