Topic Area Descriptions

Asthma Management - Looks at ways your school prevents asthma attacks by controlling environmental triggers and through appropriate medication self-carry and self-administration policies. Also assesses the degree to which your school is trained to respond to asthma emergencies. (up to 50 questions)

Healthy Eating & Nutrition - Assesses the ways your school encourages healthy food choices through food/beverage offerings in all school venues and via education about healthy eating. Also looks at other aspects of the food environment which impact students’ nutrition, such as the physical aspects of the cafeteria and time to eat meals. (up to 30 questions)

Physical Education & Physical Activity - Looks at the way your school promotes physical activity, including safety issues, availability of equipment/facilities, classes and other physical activity opportunities, and education about the benefits of being active. Also includes questions about sun safety and your school’s policies and practices to prevent exposure to damaging UV rays. (up to 38 questions)

Social & Emotional Health - Assesses the extent to which your school incorporates social and emotional health strategies both school wide and in the classroom. Looks at how your school promotes social and emotional health among students and staff, how it identifies and addresses mental health concerns, and the extent to which your school is able to partner and collaborate with community resources regarding mental health concerns for students and families. (up to 47 questions)

Tobacco-Free Lifestyles - Looks at the policies your school implements and enforces and the education it provides to students, staff, parents and the community to encourage tobacco-free lifestyles. (up to 17 questions)

Violence and Injury Prevention - Assesses the ways your school creates a positive social and emotional climate as well as the looking at how your school's physical environment helps to prevent injury, bullying, harassment, and violent incidents. Also includes questions about the school's preparedness to deal with emergencies, such as tornados, blizzards or other events that may threaten the health and safety of students and staff. (up to 29 questions)
